No Christmas Back Pain - Wrap Gifts Right, Save your Back
With Christmas here, there can be a lot of stress. Some more difficult to avoid than others. One stress that we can easily avoid is the stress that is put on your low back when wrapping those Christmas gifts.
Here are 3 key points for Wrapping Gifts Right to Save your Back:
1) Since there is no "ideal" position for wrapping gifts, the most important thing to remember is to vary your positions. For example, try standing at a counter top for some packages, sitting in a comfortable chair using the table for another, etc.
2) Do not wrap packages while sitting on the floor. Wrapping packages while sitting on a hard floor can wreak havoc on your posture, and should be avoided. Kneeling or sitting on the same plane the wrapping is taking place causes you to bend a lot. You typically have to stretch and hold the bent position for extended periods of time. This puts a great deal of stress on the neck and low back. Bending forward with your legs stretched out in front of you or crossed may restrict blood flow. Sitting on a hard surface (like a floor) also reduces blood flow.
3) When wrapping presents, it's a good idea to stretch the opposites. In other words, if you are leaning forward when wrapping your gifts, stretch backward when you are done. Gift wrapping causing back pain is something that I hear about. While the pain typically goes away, when it doesn’t it could be because there is a structural problem that needs to be corrected.
