Cyber Monday Tech Killing your Neck

With so many phones, iPads, tablets, laptops, and hand-held gaming devices being purchased this Cyber Monday and Adobe expecting this to be the biggest online shopping day in U.S. history, we should ask ourselves what kind of harm these devices may cause us.

A study found that people spend 5 hours per day on their phones. Watch most people using their phones, and you’ll see that much of that time is spent with their neck bent at an unnatural angle while shooting off emails, texts, or playing games.

When you consider how long we spend on our phones, and that tilting your head a mere 2 inches forward can cause an additional 20 pounds of pressure on your spine, muscles, ligaments, and tendons that support your head, it may help in understanding how this can cause neck pain and back pain.

However, when you look at what Stanford University published on Forward Head Posture (FHP), like the posture typically taken when using tech, you may want to change how you use your phone. According to Stanford’s paper, FHP has been linked to a host of medical problems including: strains, disc herniations, pinched nerves, lung dysfunction, heart disease, and digestive complaints.

While it is nearly impossible to avoid the technologies that cause these issues, individuals should try to look at their phones with a neutral spine and to avoid spending hours each day hunched over or with their heads pushed forward.  This short news clip can show you exactly what to do, and how to take the pressure off of your spine.
