In the summer time flip-flops are a popular choice of footwear. Although, while they may feel comfortable daily, flip flops can cause foot, hip, knee, and back injuries. Many experts including, Dr. Vidan from St. Louis, see patients who are experiencing pain everyday due to low quality footwear. Subsequently, flip-flops are now listed among the most dangerous shoes out there.

Dr. Vidan is one of St. Louis’ best docs in town, he explains what your shoes are doing to your body. Lack of support can cause critical problems in the arch and heel of the foot such as plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue on the bottom of the foot. Believe it or not, flip-flops can also alter the way you walk! Shorter strides cause our toes to crunch up tightly to hang on to the sandal. All of this leads to hip, knee, and back pain. Dr. Vidan suggests doing your best not to wear flip-flops for long periods of time and shopping for brands that offer arch support.

The Hidden Dangers of Flip-flops:

  1. Overuse can lead to stress fractures in the bones of your feet.
  2. Because you are carrying your foot differently than in more supportive shoes, you can end up changing the way you walk which. Subsequently this will throw off your natural gait, triggering pain and problems in your ankles, knees, hips, and back.
  3. The feet are the foundation of your whole body because is the base of the skeleton. Just like the domino effect, the rest of your joints and bones will have to compensate for poor footwear.

Like anything else, moderation is key, so we aren’t asking you to throw out your coolest flip-flops! Just be aware of how long you are wearing your flats and flip-flops as well as what activities you plan on doing that day. The more active and the longer you will be wearing them, the more important it is to find shoes with the right support for the day.
